Member of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PA BiH) Ermina Salkičević - Dizdarević is participating in the first Global Meeting of the International Network for Legislation on Narcotic Drugs, which is being held in Vienna.
At the meeting, which was organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Bosnia and Herzegovina was represented, in addition to MP Salkičević-Dizdarević, by Jasmin Pljevljak from the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Jelena Medar-Petrović from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Srpska.
In light of the growing challenges associated with synthetic drugs, the need for a better understanding of these substances and the urgent prevention of new threats to public health and safety is emphasized. It was assessed that parliamentarians play a key role in enacting effective policies and laws that respond to rapid changes in the drug market.
One of the conclusions of the meeting is that multilateralism and cooperation between parliaments represent the basis for successfully combating the harmful effects of synthetic drugs. Through joint approaches and exchange of experiences, it is possible to strengthen legislative capacities and ensure coordinated international action, said the participants of the meeting, which, in addition to parliamentarians, also gathered representatives of national institutions in the fields of health, security, border control, police structures and forensic laboratories.
It was also said that the protection of public health must remain a priority and emphasized that strengthening health systems and enabling access to treatment and prevention is the basis of a sustainable response to the crisis caused by synthetic drugs. (end)
