Members of the House of Representatives of PABiH Saša Magazinović and Jasmin Emrić attend the Annual UN Climate Change Summit
Members of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PABiH) Saša Magazinović and Jasmin Emrić attend, upon the invitation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Annual UN Climate Change Summit (COP28) held in Dubai.
Heads of state and government, parliamentarians, representatives of international organizations, experts from various fields, and civil society representatives from more than 200 countries worldwide participate at this globally largest event dedicated to climate change, which lasts until December 12.
As emphasized by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, this year's COP28 is dedicated to the actual abandonment of fossil fuels with the aim of preventing the climate catastrophe the planet is facing. Therefore, the Summit in Dubai is expected to emphasize the importance of taking collective action to accelerate the process of energy transition and clean energy production from renewable sources.
The organizers of the Summit also hope that this year's COP28 will succeed in keeping alive the achievement of the goal to limit the long-term global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as committed by the Paris Agreement in 2015, which Bosnia and Herzegovina also signed and ratified.
In a joint statement, Magazinović and Emrić emphasized that there is unquestionable political unity in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the necessity of fulfilling international obligations. However, decision-makers at all levels have the responsibility to take concrete actions to follow up on this commitment with specific and measurable activities. They believe that energy transition poses a significant challenge, the outcome of which in Bosnia and Herzegovina depends on timely planning and implementation of measures. Aware of all political differences, Magazinović and Emrić call on key political actors in the country to form an alliance and take joint action in the fight against climate change and environmental preservation.
Discussions at COP28 will also include addressing the issues of harmful gas emissions in agriculture, food security, and ways to adapt to weather extremes that the planet is exposed to due to the process of global warming caused by excessive use of fossil fuels. (end)
