A member of the Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ismeta Dervoz participated at a meeting of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination, during which the memorandum on gender equality in South-East Europe was presented.
The participants agreed that in all countries, serious improvements have been made in the adjustment of legislative frameworks and their harmonization with international and European standards; however, gender equality is still far from becoming everyday practice. Governments are concerned with the political and economic situation in the countries, which is especially hard to manage in a period of economic and financial crisis, however it does not include issues of gender equality when the approach should be general and transferable.

It was emphasized that the region should intensify its efforts in order to raise awareness of the necessity to strengthen the role of women. Accordingly, women have to realize their full potential in political, economical and social participation at the national and regional level. Also, there is a need to inform society about women’s rights, especially through organizing informative campaigns and including gender equality issues in school curriculums.

At the end of the meeting, all of the countries of South-East Europe were invited to continue with promotional activities and campaigns with the aim of raising awareness of the fight against domestic violence, and to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence as soon as possible. It was concluded that by undertaking these activities, a step forward would be taken in resolving issue of violence against women. (end)
