Close of Inter-Parliamentary seminar on "The role of parliaments in negotiations on EU accession "

The inter-parliamentary seminar on "The role of parliaments in negotiations on EU accession ", organized by the European Parliament and the Regional Secretariat on Parliamentary Co-operation in South-East Europe, and held in Sofia, ended today. The final presentation regarded the Enlargement Strategy of the European Commission, in the light of challenges in the accession process and the role of national parliaments in this process.

The Chairman of the Joint Committee on European Integration of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, Mr Halid Genjac, and the Deputy Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Vesna Krstović-Spremo, participated in seminar. Annual progress reports - as tools of parliamentary oversight - were discussed; including development of necessary structures and mechanisms, in light of the preparation of parliaments for negotiations on EU accession. In addition, discussions included the exchange of best practices and information between regional parliaments and the European Parliament, as facilitated by twinning and inter-parliamentary programs.

During the seminar, Mr Genjac and Ms Krstović-Spremo gave presentations on the role of parliaments in the process of EU integration, as well as on inter-parliamentary co-operation in the region of South-east Europe.

The two-day gathering included parliamentary members from countries in South-east Europe, along with the representatives of the pre-accession countries, full-fledged EU member states and representatives of the European Parliament. The analyses of parliamentary and civil society inclusion in the process of EU accession negotiations were presented by Croatia, Montenegro and Iceland; as well as analyses of the role of national parliaments in harmonization of domestic legislation with EU legislation.
