Members of the Joint Committee for Defense and Security of BiH met with the General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency

Members of BiH Joint Committee for Defense and Security have met today with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency headquarter in Vienna, Yukiya Amano.

This visit is a special honor and recognition to members of the Joint Committee for Defense and Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina for their recognized work in the parliamentary oversight of defense and security, especially for the partnership and extremely useful and meaningful work with the State Regulatory Agency for Nuclear Safety.

During the meeting on which Joint Committee was represented by its Deputy Chair, Borislav Bojić and members Šemsudin Mehmedović and Hanka Vajzović, it was stated that we are a country without nuclear facilities and that we have very small amounts of nuclear materials and radioactive sources and our core activity in radiation is reduced to the use of radiation sources predominantly in medicine and somewhat less in the industry.

The contribution of Bosnia and Herzegovina to global nuclear safety is more than modest. However, the Agency headed by Mr. Amano, as it is said today, does not divide its member countries into those who use more or less nuclear energy and equally respects them.

The members of the Joint Commission introduced Mr. Amano and his associates with the activities of the Joint Committee and both Houses of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH in relation to the Trgovska Gora - a potential nuclear waste facility in the Republic of Croatia, at the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. With reference to Trgovska Gora, the position of Bosnia and Herzegovina is known and expressed through the adoption of several acts in the form of declarations and resolutions at various levels of government in BiH expressing concern about the proceedings of the Republic of Croatia when it comes to a plan for the disposal of nuclear waste near the border with BiH.

A few members of the Joint Committee are involved in the work of the wider working body established by the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, composed of officials from all competent institutions with the task of carrying out activities related to monitoring the steps undertaken by the Republic of Croatia on this issue and respond promptly.

Mr. Yukiya Amano expressed his satisfaction with the meeting with members of the Joint Committee. He stressed the importance of the activities of BiH institutions in the protection of environment, the numerous projects that the Agency has implemented in BiH, especially through projects that are important for medicine and the work of certain agencies the priority of which is strengthening and building a safe environment for citizens.

He invited the members of Joint Committee and the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH to be  involved in the forthcoming period in the processes that, in addition to legislative drafting, in line with UN and European Union standards, should support institutions and agencies that provide their direct contribution to creating a safe environment and achieving standards that will in the future incorporate BiH institutions into the processes of the fully credible partners of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
